Open City Renaissance Sept. 20, 1968 – Bukowski As Editor Bankrupts Open City
Renaissance Magazine was the literary supplement of Open City, a Los Angles weekly published by the legendary John Bryan.
Charles Bukowski appeared in at least 40 issues of Open City, greatly contributing to the paper’s success. However, Bukowski would also be at least partially responsible for the paper’s demise.
For the September 20, 1968, issue of Renaissance, Bukowski acted as guest editor and made the decision to print Jack Micheline's Skinny Dynamite. The appearance led to the paper being charged with obscenity and the resulting legal costs would subsequently shut the paper down.
This copy in Very Good ++ condition with a couple of small slits at the fold. There are minimal tears to the edges and some light yellowing.
This issue also includes Bukowski’s long poem, “Take Me Out to the Ballgame”.
An important historical issue.
