This is a one-page, signed and dated manuscript by Charles Bukowski.

The poem “1954: Coronado Street” was only published once, in the May 1993 issue of The New Censorship, which was an all-Bukowski issue that included 12 other poems that have yet to be collected.

During 1954, Bukowski was living with his girlfriend Jane Cooney at 268 4/6 S Coronado Street in Los Angeles. It was during that year that Bukowski spent nine days in the LA County Hospital being treated for an internal hemorrhage and nearly died.

Although Bukowski wrote many works about Jane over the years, their relationship is best documented in the screenplay for the film Barfly. This 1992 poem takes place on the other side of the rooming house door, with the landlord being the central character. Like Barfly, Bukowski injects just the right amount of pain and humor.

The manuscript is in Near Fine ++ condition with a light crease on the lower left corner. It comes with a letter of authenticity from Scott Harrison, former owner of the Abandoned Planet Bookstore in San Francisco. Harrison was a friend of Martin’s and has a strong reputation among Bukowski collectors for selling authentic manuscripts.

The manuscript comes with the May 1993 issue of The New Censorship. Again, this was an all-Bukowski issue featuring 29 poems and 21 drawings. The issue is in Fine condition.

An autographed copy of the issue is available as well.
