Published in 1964, OLE 1 features three Bukowski poems:
Age
Freedom
Watchdog
The poem Watch has yet to be published again.
In this issue, there are hand corrections throughout the chapbook by Doug Blazek, including the end of Bukowski’s poem. In a letter to Blazek around the time of publication, Bukowski wrote:
“…don’t worry about the notched-up Ole, we are not mechanics, we are lazy, fumbling, aching from the shrill pipes and ugly whores, listen, try to get the CONTENT, that’s all…”
Blazek took the production issues to heart. This copy comes with a flyer Blazek sent sometime time between issues 1 and 2. In it he acknowledges the production issues but promises the quality will improve. Blazek also reaffirms the quality of the content and his mission in publishing OLE.
This is copy #65/400 copies. It is in Near Fine-minus condition with some light sunning to the spine. The flyer is in Fine condition with the original fold.
