Evergreen Review December 1967 – Bukowski’s First Appearance
Published in December 1967, Evergreen Review Vol. 11, No. 50 marked the first time Charles Bukowski was published by Evergreen.
Especially in the early days, Bukowski would submit his work over and over again to high-profile magazines, eventually giving up hope to ever be published.
An exception was Evergreen Review, which Bukowski began submitting his work to as early as 1962. Despite being rejected time and again (and complaining about it in letters to friends) Bukowski was determined to get published by the magazine. Part of it was he respected Evergreen and felt it would be considered a breakthrough for his work to appear in its pages.
It finally happened in the December 1967 issue with his poem, Men’s Crapper.
Bukowski would go on to be published in a total of five issues of Evergreen between 1967-1970.
