Little is known about this photograph taken by famed portrait photographer Carlos Freire.
The photograph features Freire. Bukowski, Linda Lee, and Freire’s son, sitting on Bukowski’s lap.
According to a Post-it note that came with the photograph, it appears to have been taken at the "Rameal Sorin”. The location is most likely Paris in 1978, when Bukowski had an infamous appearance on the French literary television show, Apostrophes.
Freire was born in Rio de Janeiro, in 1945, and has worked in Paris since 1973. He was given French nationality in 2004. Numerous key galleries and museums such as Alon Zakaim Fine Art (Dover St.) have featured Freire's work. Famous portraits include Arvo Part, in Palermo, Satyajit Ray in Calcutta, Mother Teresa in Calcutta, Khrishnamurti in Bombay,Vincenzo Consolo in Sicily, Rena and Jen-Louis Dumas in Paris, Piero Guccione in Sicily, Laurent Terzieff in Paris, Manuel de Oliveira in Porto, Alvaro Siza in Porto.
The photograph is signed on the back by Carlos Freire with a graphic of a sheep jumping over a small plant. There is also a copyright stamp with his name, telephone number and address.
