This softcover copy has two very cool things going for it.
First, it is the First Australian Edition, of which only 750 were produced.
Second, it contains the bookplate of Larry McMurtry, the Pulitzer Prize writer most famous for his for his novel, Lonesome Dove.
Published on December 15, 1978, Black Sparrow Press produced 7,257 softcover first edition copies of Women. On the same date, 750 copies of the softcover edition were produced in Sydney Australia under the imprint Wild & Woolley. The imprint is printed on the title page with a great logo and on the spine as well. Everything else is the same between the two versions.
Considering how few of the 7,257 Black Sparrow Press first softcover editions remain in circulation, it’s a fair assumption that there are far fewer of the Wild & Woolley edition.
As mentioned, what makes this copy very special is the bookplate affixed to the back of the front cover. The distinctive stirrup design was taken from the stirrup brand of Larry McMurtry 's father, W.J. McMurtry, and is still in use by the family today.
This copy has sunning to the spine, a pinch of which is on the front cover and is more pronounced on the read. There is a light crease to the upper right of the front cover and small bumps to the others. The front flap was opened firmly at one point, but the binding is solid.
