OLE 1 was Doug Blazek's first attempt at being a publisher. Perhaps in the vein of Marvin Malaone and his Wormwood Review, Blazek did a few copies of the first edition of OLE with an extra touch. In this case, Blazek hand-colored the covers of the issue  and the back page, which was printed in black type and is quite faint in standard copies. All of which makes this a one-of-a-kind copy.

Published in 1964, Ole 1 features three Bukowski poems:

  • Age
  • Freedom
  • Watchdog

Watch has yet to be published again.

In this issue, there are hand corrections throughout the chapbook by Doug Blazek, including the end of Bukowski’s poem. In a letter to Blazek around the time of publication, Bukowski wrote:

“…don’t worry about the notched-up Ole, we are not mechanics, we are lazy, fumbling, aching from the shrill pipes and ugly whores, listen, try to get the CONTENT, that’s all…”

Blazek took the production issues to heart. This copy comes with a flyer Blazek sent sometime between issues 1 and 2. In it he acknowledges the production issues but promises the quality will improve. Blazek also reaffirms the quality of the content and his mission in publishing OLE.

This issue was limited to 400 numbered copies, but this one is not numbered. The cover stock used for this copy is lighter than the first copies in the run, so it’s probably later (this would explain the flyer inclusion as well). There is some sunning to the spine, but otherwise a sold, clean copy (even if the ink ran quite a bit).

The flyer is in Near Fine condition.
