Published in 1963, Northwest Review Vol. 6, No. 4, was the first appearance of Bukowski’s “Breakthrough”, which would later appear in The Roominghouse Madrigals (1988) and Run With the Hunted (1993).

But the treasure here is a critical study with the title, “Charles Bukowski and the Savage Surfaces”. The essay was written by John William Corrington,” with whom Bukowski had a running correspondence with at the time.

There is also an ad for the next issue of El Corno Emplumado with Bukowski listed.

Northwest Review was first published by the University of Oregon in 1957. The inaugural issue included Ken Kesey’s first publication, a short story called “The First Sunday in September.” In its 54-year history, the University of Oregon’s Northwest Review published multiple winners of the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, the Booker Prize, and the National Book Critics Circle Award. Bukowski would appear in six issues of the journal between 1962-1978.
