Coastlines 12 -- First Appearance of Dow Jones: Down (1959)
Published in 1959, Coastlines 12 featured the early Bukowski poem:
Dow Jones: Down
The poem would later appear in Bukowski’s first book, Flower, Fist and Bestial Wail, (1960), The Roominghouse Madrigals (1988), and Run With the Hunted (1993).
This early appearance marks only the 26th appearance of Bukowski in any literary magazine.
Contributors include Charles Bukowski, David Ray, James Schevill, Winfield Townley Scott, George Starbuck, Diane Wakoski, Peter Yates and others.
Coastlines was a long-running poetry journal that was very influential in the L.A poetry scene and an early proponent of Bukowski’s work. Bukowski would appear in four issues between 1959 – 1964.
This copy is in Very Good + condition with a pen note and library stamp on the front cover, and some inevitable browning to the white covers. Spine is solid and interior pages are white and clean.
Overall, a very nice copy of this long-running, influential L.A. poetry journal.
