This 12-page chapbook contains an interview with Bukowski conducted by Jay Dougherty. It focuses on Bukowski’s success in the West German market and the important role Carl Weissner played. Included are six reproduced letters from Bukowski to Weissner.
The imprint is listed as “S Press Tonband Verlag" out of Dusseldorf Germany. Not much is known about who was actually behind the series of Bukowski chapbooks bearing the imprint. According to Wikipedia “S Press Tonbandverlag was a publisher of experimental literature , Beat poetry , and concrete poetry.” But it seems unlikely the press itself was behind these chapbooks bearing the name.
Titled “Charles Bukowski and the Outlaw Spirit”, this chapbook is merely a photocopy of a feature that appeared in Gargoyle No. 35 in 1988. It was printed on high quality paper (including end pages), but the reproduction value is low.
This copy is in Very Good + condition with bumps, light creases and a couple tiny tears to the oversized covers.
In my years of collecting. I’ve only seen these chapbooks a handful of times over the years. A nice addition for a Bukowski completist.
