BUKOWSKI: BACK TO THE MACHINEGUN, Volume 3, 1978-1980

There are three volumes in this series, each of which contain a large number of Bukowski poems, with this volume running close to 320 pages. The origin of the series is unclear, as there is no information provided regarding the publisher.

Legend has it that a group of outlaw publishers that go by the name the “Prague Collective” produced it out of Eastern Europe. All that is provided is the year of publication for Volume 1, which is said to have been 2014.

There is a preface, which reads:

“The poems in this book were transcribed directly from the original manuscripts typed by Charles Bukowski. These volumes were created in an effort to preserve the original writing, which is in danger of being lost to all but the small handful of scholars and collectors who are able to view the poem manuscripts.

During his lifetime, relatively little editing was done to Bukowski’s poems in the Black Sparrow Press collections. However, the poetry collections published by Black Sparrow Press and HarperCollins/Ecco subsequent to Bukowski’s death in 1994 differ – sometimes in very significant ways – from the manuscripts versions of the work. The rewriting of his work in the posthumous poetry collections greatly diminishes Bukowski’s singular voice.

Here then, are the unmolested words of one of the 20^th century’s greatest poets. Let him speak for himself.”

Sounds like a bunch of subnormals if you ask me. I hope John Martin tracks down their leader and beats her with the limb of a Joshua tree.
