Kevin Ring’s Beat Scene magazine is a treasure for Bukowski and Beat fans alike. I’m in the “never the twain shall meet” camp, but in this case the exception is deserved. Plus, Kevin’s a good guy who put a lot of work and high production value into each issue of the magazine.
There isn’t much Bukowski in this issue, just a couple of reviews on books about Bukowski. There are articles on Charles Olson (fellow Black Sparrow write whose writing Bukowski despised), Second Coming publisher A. D. Winans, and Dan Fante (son of John).
Against the American Dream: Essays On Charles Bukowski by Russell Harrison (Rebel Inc)
An academic study of Bukowski that attempts to analyze his literary themes and his complex relationship with his father, among other theories. Reviewer Colin Cooper finds it a funny and worthwhile book, noting that Harrison acknowledges Bukowski's disdain for working life and his poking fun at absurdity. Originally published by Black Sparrow, this is its first English edition.
Drinking With Bukowski: Recollections of the Poet Laureate of Skid Row, Edited by Daniel Weizman (Thunders Mouth Press)
A collection of recollections about Bukowski from people who knew him, including Harold Norse, Karen Finley, Sean Penn, Barry Miles, and Raymond Carver, among others. Reviewer Dawn Swoop finds it uneven, praising standout contributions like Jean Francois Duval's interview and Karen Finley's piece, while criticizing some inclusions as inane and repetitive. She notes the absence of John Martin of Black Sparrow Press is a significant gap, and while Bukowski fans will want it, she expected more overall.

Mike is passionate and fascinating. I bought him the 1968 vinyl "Poetry" with Steve Richmond, one of the rarest items related to Buk. I'm so happy.
