Published in 1980, this is the Black Sparrow Press First Hardcover Trade Edition of John Fante’s Ask the Dust with an introduction by Charles Bukowski.

It comes with the uncommon prospectus for the book, which features Bukowski’s introduction. It’s a single sheet folded once to make a four-page booklet.

Both the book and the prospectus are in Fine condition.

When he was in his late teens and early 20s, Bukowski spent hours at the Los Angeles Public Library reading literary books he randomly pulled of the shelves looking for inspiration. He found most novels, even the classics, to be disappointing. And when he did find a writer he liked, he was equally disappointed when later their novels failed to live up to earlier ones.

An exception was John Fante. Part of it may have been because he wrote about Los Angeles, but Bukowski also championed Fante for the word and the line. He often wondered what happened to Fante, who actually down the road writing scripts in Hollywood.

Bukowski eventually tracked down his hero at the Motion Picture and Television Hospital, Country House and Lodge in Woodland Hills where Fante was being treated for diabetes. Black Sparow Press publisher also took an interest in Fante and began publishing his out-of-print books. The first was Ask the Dust, for which Bukowski wrote the introduction.
