He influenced generations of cartoonists and illustrators with a gritty, in-your-face approach to urban life. Bukowski and Spain met at least once at a party in the early 1970s. Bukowski challenged Spain to a fight, but backed down when Spain took him up on the offer. The \"Poets\" font inside the #6 on the cover usually fades dramatically with time, but the neon orange color is intact with this copy, as is the $1 price. There are some visible small scratches and scuffs in the black 6 of the design, but the covers are very clean for the white background. Interior pages have the normal toning from age. What is very unusual is that Bukowski did not paint over the original printed drawings that are included in the centerfold section of the chapbook. Rather, these pages were printed with only the poem without the printed drawings. The reasonable conclusion is that Bukowski requested these pages be printed without the drawings so he could add the original paintings himself. Individual dates on the calendar itself cite important moments in Bukowski's life and other events in literary and pop-culture history.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003eCharles Putris illustrated the calendar and I think his grainy depictions of Bukowski’s gritty life is spot on.
