She gave birth to Bukowski’s only child, Marina Louise Bukowski, on September 7, 1964.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eBukowski was dumbfounded at first. She was 41 years old and he thought it impossible she (or he) could possibly conceive a child. At first he was scared and overwhelmed by the prospect. He was making significant inroads in the poetry journals and his second book from LouJon Press was in the works.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eBut Bukowski, perhaps because of the era, immediately proposed that the two get married. That was not part of Frances’ plan. She had just completed her divorce from Wray Smith on the East Coast, with whom she had four daughters. Frances moved to California in 1963, leaving her daughters with their father.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eAny fears Bukowski had of being a father melted away when he first saw Marina. She immediately became the apple of his eye, writing about her frequently in his letters and continued to do so for many years. Frances was a free spirit, always being carried with the wind and bringing Marina along. Perhaps it was a commune for the summer or staying with a friend in San Francisco for 6 months, but FrancEye was always on the move.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eIt saddened Bukowski when Marina was away, and he expressed in letters that when she was gone. He wrote he Marina letters and called her on the phone frequently. He was in pure joy when she was back in town for periods of time so he could spend time with her.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThere’s a poem where Frances disciplines Marina in a rather harsh way, but Bukowski makes no judgement in the poems. And in real life, despite her wanderlust, Bukowski seemed to have a high degree of trust in Frances to care for their child. The condition had caused him pain and bleeding over several years and resulted in many sick days at the Post Office. It was Bukowski’s second stay in the hospital, following stomach ulcers that nearly killed him years earlier.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe chapbook’s announcement, which was distributed through Ole 4, with the title “THE ANAL UNDERGROUND”. Most announcement is a rundown of Bukowski “misadventures” told in “CONFESSIONS OF A MAN INSANE ENOUGH TO LIVE WITH BEASTS”, the previous book of Bukowski prose published by Open Skull. Blazek describes the new book as “just as raucous, just as bitter, just as penetrating as CONFESSIONS”.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eBeyond the two books of Bukowski prose, Blazek was an accomplished poet and the publisher of OLE magazine. Eight issues of OLE were produced between 1964 and 1967, and in a way it started where the Outsider left off, in terms of giving exposure to underground poets. Even if the magazine was primitively produced on mimeo, the quality of the writing itself set a standard for the period, rivaling only Marvin Malone’s Wormwood Review.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eBlazek and Bukowski considered themselves friends and had a lengthy correspondence between 1964 to 1968. But as with other poets and editors, the relationship ended abruptly after their first meeting in person. The press produced limited editions of 150 and 300 copies and were signed by the author. The contents were brief, such as a short story, an essay, a speech, a poem, or an excerpt. Titles included “The State of the Novel” by Walker Percy (in conjunction with Faust Press); “Ill Seen Ill Said” by Samuel Beckett; “The Literature of Exhaustion and the Literature of Replenishment” by John Barth; “Acrobats in the Park” by Eudora Welty; and “A Collection of Reviews” by Ross Macdonald.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003eCold Dogs in the Courtyard was produced by Ron Offen and Jay Robert Nash.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003eRon Offen co-edited Odyssey magazine, which featured Bukowski in Vol. 11, No. 1, in 1959. In it, he mentions somewhat bitterly that the correspondence suddenly stopped, later on indicating he thought Purdy’s success had something to do with it.
